Pass It On —— words and music © Michael Lydon
When you get a little love, pass it on
You can give it all away, it’s never gone
If someone’s good to you, be good to someone new
Cause the only thing to do when you get a little love is pass it on.
Hard times come, you think you’re gonna break
You ain’t the only one who’s felt heartache
Listen to the symphony of tears folks cry inside
We’re all a little lonely, we’ve all got things we hide
——Like that nice man on the bus
——Who held you when you tripped
——Without his helping hand
——You might’ve busted your hip
——But did you know that very day
——He’d heard his child was dying
——And he was smiling at you
——To keep himself from crying.
That little bit of love was God’s little gift
Didn’t it give your spirit such a sweet lift?
Well, it’s hard to thank God way up in the sky
But loving your neighbor is a good way to try.
So when you get a little love, pass it on
You can give it all away, it’s never gone
If someone’s good to you, be good to someone new
Cause the only thing to do when you get a little love is pass it on.

I wrote this lyric in 1996 after my beloved nephew, Joao Paulo Fonseca died suddenly. After his death I thought, “What can I do with the love I felt for JP?” The answer: “Love other people, anybody! Pass the the love on.” That feeling became this song. |
